Hartney
received a land grant of 119 ac. in Township 20 Range 6 in Tuscaloosa Co. in 1858. This grant is just west of Gurley’s 1858
grant. Hartney
is in the 1860 Tuscaloosa, Al census as Hartley
Sellers. He was in the AL 36th
Infantry Co. H and it is believed that Hartney died
in the Civil War. His burial site is
unknown at this time. His widow,
Elizabeth Acker, went on to marry Newton T. Armstrong on 19 Feb 1868. Newton was her junior born in
1844. This marriage produced 4 children:
Martha, Sara, Lory and Argus Venco
all females. Newton remarried in 1911 to Mary E.
Harkney.
Hartney’s daughter, Ruth Elizabeth married Jesse Reaves 10 Dec 1874 in Tuscaloosa at the residence of John Williard. They moved
to Limestone Co. (Mexia), Texas and their first child,
William H. was born there Jul 1880.
Other children include Otho G., 12 Jan 1886; Ethel, Apr 1888 and Roy, Jan 1890. Otho married Bessie
(unknown). They had Thelma,1911; Mary Ruth, 1913; Wiliam Otho, 1915 and Dorothy, 1917 all born in the Mexia area.
